Welcome to Xiangqi! Here's how each piece moves:
Moves one space at a time within the palace (the 3x3 grid marked with diagonal lines). Cannot leave the palace or face the opposing general directly without pieces between them.
Moves one space diagonally within the palace. Cannot leave the palace.
Moves exactly two spaces diagonally. Cannot jump over pieces and cannot cross the river.
Moves like a chess knight - two spaces in one direction and one space perpendicular. Can be blocked by pieces in the first step.
Moves any number of spaces horizontally or vertically, like a chess rook.
Moves like a chariot, but must jump over exactly one piece to capture. When not capturing, moves without jumping.
Moves one space forward before crossing the river. After crossing, can also move one space horizontally. Never moves backward.
